At a recent Good Morning Galveston meeting, I asked our members a simple question: How many of you expect to still be in business next year?
I was shocked when only about half raised their hands.
Our Chamber represents a diverse mix of businesses, from solopreneurs and small, regionally owned shops and businesses to larger corporations. Like you, I’ve been surprised and saddened to see some longtime businesses close in recent months. These businesses are part of what makes Galveston special, and when they close, our entire community feels the impact.
Listening to Our Business Community
So, we’re digging deeper. We’ve surveyed our members about their business health, customers, challenges and how the Chamber can help. We’re using their feedback to shape next year’s professional development programs and exploring ways to continue to connect businesses with volunteers who can offer one-on-one guidance.
But we can’t do it alone. The strength of our local economy depends on all of us.
The $2 Challenge: Small Dollars, Big Impact
That’s why we’re partnering again with The Galveston Daily News on the $2 Challenge. Here’s how it works: Take $100 you already plan to spend, exchange it for fifty $2 bills at a participating Moody Bank branch, and spend those bills at local businesses. It’s a fun, visible reminder that where we spend our money matters. The Challenge begins now, so keep an eye out for more details and get ready to participate!
Why Shopping Local Matters for Galveston
When you shop locally, your dollars help support local jobs, suppliers and community organizations. Local business owners are also our neighbors, friends and community partners. They sponsor youth sports, support nonprofits, our schools, and help make our community a better place to live and work. When local businesses thrive, our entire region benefits.
Our member survey is already revealing some challenges: increased competition, including from online retailers, fewer customers, lower customer spending and inventory or supply issues. Add persistent inflation and rising costs like rent and insurance, and it’s easy to see why local businesses need our support.
Simple Ways You Can Support Local Businesses
Here’s where you come in:
- Shop local whenever your budget allows.
- Recommend your favorite local businesses on social media.
- Share photos and videos of places you love to shop, eat and do business.
- Leave a positive online review. It can make a real difference to a business trying to attract its next customer.
Supporting local doesn’t mean changing your entire budget. It might mean grabbing your morning coffee at a neighborhood café, purchasing a gift card from a local shop or hiring a local contractor. Small choices can add up when we make them together.
Building a Stronger Region Together
At the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce, our mission is “to promote and advocate for business and community development.” We’re committed to helping our business community succeed, and we need you alongside us.
The next time you reach for your credit card, debit card or one of those $2 bills, remember: Think local first. Our community is counting on it!
