GALVESTON, TX – (June 4, 2026) – Recently, Gulf Copper Shipyard and Davie Defense broke ground on a new facility that will build the U.S. Coast Guard’s Arctic Security Cutters (ASC). This military contract is expected to generate approximately 2,000 jobs, reinforcing the importance of building a strong local workforce pipeline.

To help prepare the next generation for these emerging opportunities, the Maritime Careers Camp introduces students to the range of careers available in this growing industry.

Maritime Careers Camp 2026

The Maritime Careers Camp is designed for eighth through tenth graders who are curious about ships, how food, clothing, and goods move across the world, and the wide range of careers within the maritime industry. The camp, created in partnership with Texas A&M University at Galveston, is a free, weeklong experience scheduled for July 13–17, offering students a hands-on look at the maritime world.

From touring a cruise ship and visiting the Coast Guard to learning about welding, offshore operations, and virtual navigation, students gain firsthand insight into what these careers look like right here at home.

“The Maritime Careers Camp is a result of our Maritime Career Pathways Committee,” said Gina Spagnola, President & CEO of the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce. “These maritime jobs are good-paying jobs, and this camp offers a valuable introduction to those opportunities.”

The deadline for applications is June 26. Applications are available on the Chamber’s website under Events—look for Maritime Careers Camp on the home page and on the Chamber calendar on July 13. Completed applications should be sent to seacamp@tamug.edu.
