WORK Galveston County Project
The WGC campaign, in collaboration with regional organizations including the City of Galveston, Galveston County officials, Workforce Solutions, Galveston Island Park Board of Trustees and CVB, Galveston Chapter of the Restaurant Association, Galveston Hotel and Lodging Association, Galveston College and other higher education institutions, human resource representatives and other regional businesses and community partners, will be divided into two phases.
Phase one is immediate and aimed at attracting and hiring quality employees to fill the urgent needs of the business communities as we enter our peak summer season. The recent effects of COVID and the high numbers of unemployed individuals receiving federal unemployment resulting in a lack of motivation to work for any less income than currently receiving, along with the lack of available foreign student programs has caused a crisis in our community, one which, if unchecked, could cause our hospitality and retail businesses to fail and our community to undergo a radical reduction in customer service.
Phase two will begin to look at more long-term career paths to prepare individuals for future job opportunities. The GRCC will utilize our internal groups such as our young professionals C-Crewe, Leadership Galveston, and the Junior Navigators as a resource in identifying future job opportunities and career pathways. We will also rely on our educational partners to help these applicants learn the hospitality industry.
The Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce is proud to lead this initiative to support our business community and help Galveston County overcome this challenging hurdle, both short and long-term.
